I enjoyed this book a lot. I was hesitate to read it because of the 1 star reviews. I tend to find myself agreeing with 1 star reviews more often than 5 stars. But based on prior experience reading Madeline Hunter, in particular her wonderful medieval "By" series, I decided to give this one a try. While not a dark romance by any means, this is also not a lighthearted romance. The two leads are rather serious minded sorts and probably not everyone's cup of tea. The characterizations are layered and deep, but subtle and if you aren't paying attention there is much about them that can be missed. Both leads are strong and smart, and while not without insecurities, they do not allow those insecurities to rule them or allow them to behave stupidly. Hayden was wonderful. An honorable man, strong, passionate, and devoted. Alexia was a diamond in the rough, brought to life by Hayden's passion and devotion. I truly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more regencies by Madeline Hunter.

Most of the time I really enjoy reading books by Ms. Hunter, this one was a little off for me. Thought the first third or half was boring and it seem to drag. Loved Hayden! Alexia rubbed me the wrong way, I didn't see a reason for Hayden to fall in love with her. I enjoyed the story line and the characters, good and bad. Yes, I will continue to read Madeline Hunter's works.
Loved the story line and frankness of the characters. Hayden and Alexia was very straight forward with there feelings, none of that guessing games other books and characters play with each other. Refreshing to read a book that doesn't drag the plot or characters feelings in a book
I have been having a hard time lately finding a historical romance that is good. Not great, not fantastic merely good. Many of my go to authors are writing some dull stuff. Desperate for something to read that I wouldn't abandon after 80 or so pages I decided to give Rules of Seduction a re read as I liked it a lot the first time I read it and had it on my keeper shelf.
The second time around this book is even better. The character development is superb . The plot while having been done before was interesting to me. The tension was superb . I loved Hayden a hero who had a brain and used it. Nothing is more desirable to me than an intelligent grown up H not the over done rake who has slept his way through half the women in London that seems to be the rage . Alexia was no silly ninny but a wonderful , practical h . Definitely in my top ten favorite historical romances.
I enjoyed this read as much as her other works. I'm reading through all of her stories now and this one was new to me. After finishing it I'm more interested in finding out what happens to the rest of the brothers and friends. I'm disappointed there wasn't an epilogue as I wanted more but that isn't something that this author does so the abrupt ending is always leaves you with the desire for more. But the stories are always different and the mix of mystery and deception was just as enjoyable as the romance. I also though the villain was very interesting and unpredictable. I would defiantly recommend to a friend and I'm off to read the next book in the series now. I'm also hoping some other character get what they deserve...both good and bad.
I purchased this book in paperback a few years ago and have since repurchased it recently for because my original copy went missing. Over the years I think I have read this book over 10 times, I love it that much.
I think I am one of those women whose view of the perfect hero is always going to be somehow influenced by Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. The tall, dark and brooding hero who still manages to seethe with barely restrained passion. A hint of danger, but never violence. Swoon-worthy for sure! Also the heroine is spot on, plain and practical but with hidden beauty that the hero is able to discern right away.
The chemistry between the two is great, as is the dialogue. They are both intelligent and well-spoken and I love the zippy repartee as well as the insight into the thoughts of both characters. The plot is deft and interesting, considering it revolves around embezzlement and utterance (a word I admit I did have to look up.)
Although not a perfect novel, I have given it five stars because I enjoyed it as much the tenth time I read it as the first.
Lord Hayden, with his handsome dark looks, and his financier skill, finds his family's bank holdings in jeopardy. If the bank had not belonged to a trusted friend, Benjamin, who is now deceased, Hayden would not have tried to correct the error. Hayden must pick up the financial pieces and make ruthless decisions in order to stabilize the bank and insure the safe return of many aristocrats' monies. In the process, he finds himself intrigued by one young woman in Benjamin's remaining household, Alexia, with her violet eyes. While attracted to the handsome Lord Hayden, Alexia finds him ruthless in shuffling Benjamin's family out of their residence. When Alexia finds herself at the financial mercy of Lord Hayden, she initially works as a companion to his dear Aunt---but her position in the same household as Hayden culminates in erotic pleasures. Hayden offers marriage to Alexia as she is the only woman that has intrigued him with her intelligence, beauty, and form---but he finds himself becoming jealous of a corpse with Alexia's continual sentiment for the deceased Benjamin. That is, until Alexia's deceased love reappears and it is discovered that Benjamin intentionally led her on to love him, since he is now married. And he intentionally defrauded those clients in his bank and ran with the money, betraying Hayden. Hayden allows his old friend to leave, not wanting to see him hanged. But Hayden now believes that Alexia will leave with Ben. However, Alexia is an intelligent woman---and she may have held a nostalgic sentiment for Benjamin---but Hayden holds her passion and her heart.
