Given that each chapter carried a name that had something to do with gardening, I admit that in the back of my mind, I kept trying to figure out the association of the title and chapter headings to the book itself. While I was unable to immediately confirm why Garden became an important theme, I enjoyed learning how it evolved from one character in particular... see my blog for excerpts...

The Desolate Garden starts out as a murder mystery, but as you read, it becomes primarily an historical investigation that flashes back to activities in Great Britain and in Russia...

The Honorable Harry Paterson had just become Lord Paterson as a result of his father's death...murder, that is... Harry had not been close to his father, and the specific position of each child was automatically declared based upon their placement in birth. Harry was fortunate when a younger son had been born and he had not had the responsibility to take over the family bank, about which he'd been quite pleased!

But his father being murdered naturally placed him as a "major person of interest" because of his inheritance of being named "Lord."

But instead of being interviewed and returning to his home, a liaison officer had been named to stay with him through the entire investigation, perhaps for safety of the new Lord, but primarily to determine exactly what he might know about the murder.

I must say that I became fascinated with the interview process and imagined it must be similar to that now being done by Special Investigator Mueller, for certainly, tracking the money became a significant part of the discussions with the new Lord Paterson.

It was quite clear that Judith knew much more about Harry and his family than he does. On the other hand, Harry's father had contacted him before his death about secret transactions that he'd discovered at the family bank and asked for help in trying to learn more about them. What evolved is a long history of collusion, spying, financial payment for political reasons, as well as personal family secrets that went back three generations.

The further I read, the more I was intrigued in discovering not only what and why things had happened as they did, but who was now committing murder, perhaps to hide some of those historical secrets...But, I have to share that nothing prepared me for the ending! Very Cool! I love being stumped by the author as he weaves his magic...

I'm not a fan of war, but, you know, this historical story provided me a better understanding of what is happening in today's world. I knew there were things that the average national citizen didn't know about...but I realized after this novel, just how corrupt and ruthless politics and wars between and among nations can be. By the dialogue method between the two main characters used to follow past and present steps, readers feel as if they are right there, working within the investigation, discovering each detail, and able to see how and why each action took place... Clearly the author's past profession has allowed him to transfer his experience into edgy stories!

The conclusion was quite satisfactory, but I did wonder what the future held in store for Harry, the son who lost not only his father, but his younger brother, who was also murdered, and was, for quite some time in danger of losing his own life. The book is slow-moving, meticulous in detail, while suspenseful and complex enough to pull readers into the story more and more. A sub-plot where new members of Harry's family were identified at the same time he was losing those from his immediate family gave a softening effect to the overall horror that had happened through the years. If my comments sound interesting...do check it out...it's highly recommended.

This book is filled with intrigue, mystery, tradition, love and more. It is a spy thriller steeped in mystery. Danny Kemp will take you on a journey you will never forget. His characters are interesting but riveting. When H. digs into his family history and discovers secrets, spying, lust, murder and romance, yes romance. I recommend this book to everyone, and it will not disappoint, The ending will knock your socks off.

I have already started another book of Danny Kemp's "What Happened In Vienna Jack" and can not put it down.

Well done Mr. Kemp, you have gained a loyal reader.
The review above details the novel but I must add that Kemp's wry humor, swift pacing and knowledge of human nature makes this a fantastic read.
You'll be charmed even as you're horrified at the all-too-believable tale. Kemp has a sure hand with the differing strata he moves his characters around in--he also has a huge knowledge of little bits and pieces that add to making his characters so real they jump off the page! There's something here for everyone, male and female readers alike.
This book was supposed to be made into a movie, and I do hope that occurs, because it would be a movie that you would want to watch again and again. It's also a book you want to read again so you can pick up what you missed the first time through. This author has his own particular way he writes, and I can see some people might get annoyed, but I like his style.
This is a murder mystery, a spy thriller, as well as a huge amount of information about what occurs before the Russian revolution, after, governments around the world and how they affect a few families through all those years to the present. All very interesting to me. Harry was my favorite character.
But who was the killer? Why kill?
I never figured it out, never saw what was coming. So yes, I will read it again. I highly recommend this book.
After looking through many highly rated reviews of Kemp's book here, I was amazed. The story line is a complicated one, going on to one trail after another of plots, international spy events, a study of 20th century European history ranging from Russia to many places in Europe. I tried my best to keep track of where the author was headed but was overwhelmed along the way, trying to keep straight the many relationships of family and governments, intrigues and deadly dangers.
The major problem for me, however, in reading this was the profound need for an editor. Errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and other matters kept pulling me away from the story. If an editor had worked with the author, this would have been a very good read. I instead got lost on the many family stories and interactive connections of relationships, connections between stories from Russia to England to other locations, involving a large group of related family members. A correct use of grammar, spelling and punctuation would have been the most helpful for me, so that I could read the story and not get bogged down in errors of writing as well as a confusion of family relationships. This could have been a fine story.
Sitting down with this book is like a stroll through history. It all begins when Lord Harry Paterson meets Judith Meadows and is thrust into a mystery thriller involving his late father Lord Elliot Paterson.Readers will find espionage, adventure and mystery winding through the story of a man and his past all started with a look at a ledger that doesn't quite seem on the up and up.
