This book of love and a mystery is a delight! A runaway wife and revenge driven husband together after nine years -- she in in his clutches once again and he is determined to make her pay for the rumors that have swirled around him. Because of her disappearance he was said to have killed his wife. It didn't help that he was a cold and remote. But, who really has the upper hand?

The characters are drawn in such a way that you can't help yourself -- I adored both the heroine and hero. The dialogue is sharp and clever.

But there is also a question of who is a murderer in the house. I didn't find that to be particularly difficult to figure out, but that wasn't my main interest. I just wanted the heroine and hero to discover the persons they had become those years apart and to appreciate those adult qualities.

Highly recommend this one.

The vague plot was just an excuse for a series of sexual encounters. I enjoy the well crafted books of Loretta Chase, Emma Jensen, Mary Balogh, Kasey Micheals, Cindy Holbrook, and Barbara Metzger.
Like it like all the others but...yes two big buts. First and bigger the male character, he is to agressive and too much of a bully, that almost make me stop reading the story. The second and lesser but its the mystery tale, not to well developed in my opinion. But good enough.
At the beginning when Hannah arrived at her new post and discovered that her employer was actually her estranged husband, I was hooked. It appeared that Dougald had been anxiously awaiting her arrival and that he wanted to make amends. I was eager to discover the misunderstanding that had separated the two lovers for nine long years.
But I was disappointed. Dougald only wanted to get revenge from the humiliation he suffered after her departure and the rumors of her death at his hands. He didn't care about her at all, except that she be obedient to his demands. He was just too cruel to be believed.
On the other hand, Hannah is a strong, independent woman who has proved that she doesn't need a man to succeed. So why does she succumb so easily to this man's wiles? Does she really believe a man this troubled can change overnight? She needs a good taste of Dr. Laura's "Ten Ways Women Screw Up Their Lives."
This story lacks the humor of the Christina Dodd's other books. Well, there WERE traces of it, but it seemed to get swallowed up by the cruelty of the hero and his nasty butler. The ending had some humor, but I would have crowed to see that nosy old butler eaten by a crocodile or left to rot in the dungeon. (No, I'm not usually bloodthirsty, just disgusted with this guy's interference.)
I don’t know... the last 3 heroines of the Governess Brides all seem to have the same personality. Even being the aggressor in the first kisses. All the hero’s are arrogant and disdain love and there is a constant power struggle between the woman and the man. Time to find another author.
Loved this book, although I have to admit... hated the (anti-) hero Dougald for most of the book. He was such a jerk! BUT Ms. Dodd's ending brings it all together and we see how far he's grown. I now look back at him fondly!!! She's a master at witty, fresh, smart dialogue. She has a strong heroine in Hannah, and has us cheering her triumphs and choking up at her misfortunes. Again, her peripheral characters are strong and endearing. Her passionate scenes turn on the heat! I'd recommend this book for anyone who loves a wonderfully written historical romance that has a modern feel to it. This was a quick read for me.
I have read this book twice now. I am not sure why there are any negative ratings because I loved the book..both times, The charters are strong and command respect including the beds aunts. The hero and heroine struggle agains their attraction to each other but find they can't help themselves. The storyline was really well done. There is always one character who is silly but rest assured it is not the H or the h. I did not like putting down this book both times I read it. I am so glad I decided to go ahead with purchase and not let the negative reviews influence me.
Hannah Setterington has sold the school she had run with a couple others. She is wanting to look for her grandparents, but she also takes a job as a companion for someone. That person lives with the new Duke of Raeburn. Having no idea who the knew man is she is shocked to find that her new employer is her husband, a husband she had run away from more then nine years ago. What does her husband want with her? And he is about to find out that she has grown and changed quite a lot in the years since they have seen each other. It was a fairly unique romance for the couple falling in love were already married to each other, but it was interesting to see them make the journey. I would definitely consider this author in the future.
