I love this book. Weed is a great writer in the full sense of the word, a great storyteller who creates full and interesting characters, a fantastic wordsmith, a creator of perfect rhythms, painterly in his ability to describe people and places, a champion of clear and economical language. The conflict is compelling and deep. Setting is used fully and described beautifully.
I love the contrasts. The historical realism/detail and mysticism work together gloriously. The friendship between young man and old man, from different cultures, is wonderful.
Although it has been called a Young Adult novel, Will Poole's Island is for all ages. In some ways I'm glad it's targeted at YA, because more young adults will read it during the years when some books often hit us especially hard -- this is that sort of book.

A novella-length, meticulously researched, beautifully written story of an orphaned boy in Colonial New England. The historical detail here is top notch - clothing, boats, everything Native American. I'd read whatever Tim Weed writes next.
This is an excellent novel which deserves a much wider audience. The characters are engaging, the story line is well put together, and the writing style flows. The author's use of magical realism in colonial New England was brilliant as well as original, and particularly apt for that period of time, when the Europeans were as much magical thinkers as the indigenous peoples were. I hope Tim Weed continues to write fiction and that I'll have the opportunity to read more of his novels in the future.
What I loved about "Will Poole's Island" is the merging of two worlds at odds with each other in such a compelling way that author Tim Weed does so compellingly. The writing is a masterclass in craft- beautifully executed and always thought provoking, Will Poole is a great hero here, often doubting himself and unsure of the path forward, courageously he manages to follow his heart and take his most authentic path, one that leads him to his true self. With the help of his indian mentor, a shaman, and beautifully drawn character by Tim Weed, Will finally embraces his true talents, even though it makes him different from the world he grew up in.
A great read for all ages- I highly recommend this beautiful novel!
I just finished reading Will Poole's Island. It had all of the elements that I look for in a good read -- suspense, happiness, sadness, history and much more. I really felt like I got to know the characters personally through Tim Weed's masterful development of them. I wish the book was longer so that I could have read morel about Will's time on "his" island. Perhaps that sets up the possibility of a sequel??
Tim Weed's knack for description is rivaled only by his grasp of a lost vernacular. Will Poole's Island makes the past come alive, and the story of a boy who feels at home in the wilderness sucked this reader in from the first page. While it was obvious that much research was involved in the creation of this novel, the research never marred the action or the story; Weed is a narrative builder above all. This was a highly enjoyable and educational read.
Will Poole, the young English settler in colonial America who comes of age in this story, finds a new life and a new world in the company of his American Indian mentor, Squamiset. Full of myth and mystery as well as exhilarating adventure, this book is the perfect place to lose yourself when you want to be transported -- and to find yourself when you want to come home.
As an American history major, I felt that I was given too many facts about 17th century colonial America. I wanted flesh-and-blood. Weed has done this and more. Readers of YA will be pulled in by the adventures winding though the chapters. While they're gasping and listening to their hearts pound, they'll get a good amount of the context on both the English and Indian sides of the events. All of the writing is vivid. Even the mythological elements seem real. The epilogue and Author's Note offer important information to interested readers. If I were still teaching, I'd find a way to weave in this compelling novel as part of the study of North American geography. No doubt teachers of the colonial period and other studies will find this a valuable support to the curriculum.
