My first read of Ms. Eden's was delightful. My second was a little disappointing with how similar I felt the stories were. This, my third read, has been downright disappointing. I know Ms. Eden can do better than this.

30% into the story and our hero is falling in love with our heroine. He has had very little interaction with our heroine. I go into these stories knowing this will happen, but I enjoy being drawn there. This felt like someone told me "they ran into each other a few times- he loved her." Um, what? How? When? I can imagine he was feeling perhaps uplifted, but for a man who in the last of this series gave every indication he shut everyone out and to suddenly open up and fall in love with her at 30%? Common!

"She didn't answer his rhetorical question. He hadn't expected her to." Uh, yes, that's why they just stated it was a rhetorical question, so you've just repeated yourself there. I'm not usually this picky, but I know from other books Ms. Eden hasn't missed such a silly thing as this, so it bugs me.

The crying. Both the child and our heroine went from happy to sad to happy to sad in 5 seconds flat. She was crying, now she's giggling with joy. Now she's crying for joy. Now she's sobbing in anguish. Throughout this entire book. Dry up, buttercup!

"...she asked with a saucy raise of her eyebrow." How does one raise an eyebrow in a saucy manor? Intrigued, challenging, skeptical- yes, I can see that, but saucy? Again, something that wouldn't normally bother me, but I feel like this could have been better.

WHAT is the blimey difference if it's Marion or Mary? Almost every historical romance book I've read has nicknames from their hellishly long 'Christian' names. So she announced herself as Mary- so what! Let it be a fun little nick-name! No, instead we get to to through this - I guess- meant to be touching "oh Marion suits you so much more" They're practically the same, yet there's this big hubbapaloo about one versus the other. Yesh!

My whines completed, I cannot say I hated the book. I know, it surprised me too! I really enjoy Ms. Eden's writing style, and that's why I was so very disappointed- I truly believe Ms. Eden could have written better, added some creativity, to really let this story shine. It was cute in theory, but just broke my heart over its flaws.

I will add it was wonderful to revisit Philip and Sorrel again. These are two truly well written characters and Ms. Eden kept them equally strong in this book, though they were only supportive cast. Their brief scenes were perhaps my favorite, and what made me give this book 3 stars instead of 2.

Drops Of Gold Sarah M Eden 9781440466939 Books Reviews

I am not a fan of writing reviews unless I have a problem with what I've ordered. This review, however, is definitely NOT about a problem, it is, instead, a congratulations review to the author, Sarah Eden. The Jonquil Brothers Series of books from Sarah have been a wonderful set of clean romance novels for anyone to enjoy! They are true love stories that make you feel as if you've lost a dear friend when the books end, and I absolutely love the fact that Sarah mentions all of the brothers in all of the books so that you're able to stay in touch the whole time. I did, however, read them out of order, but I still was able to figure out who was who, and what was going on with who and I thoroughly enjoyed every last second of them all. The title's are Friends and Foes, The Kiss of a Stranger, Drops of Gold, and As You are. If you ever get some quiet time to yourself, and are in the market for a great read, do download any of these four books by Sarah Eden, you won't regret it. Sarah also has several other really great books like Seeking Persephone (this will forever be one of my all time favorites), Courting Miss Lancaster, An Unlikely Match, and Glimmer of Hope. Happy Reading!
Drops of gold is an okay fairy tale type book. It deals with what would normally be deep religious and marital problems in a Disney sort of way. It uses a governess type character to intervene in a family of depressed individuals to make everything okay again. The hero falls for his servant girl but refuses to marry her but, wait, it's okay because the servant girl is really a princess in disguise so he can marry her after all! I can see from reading previous reviews that a lot of readers adored this book but I found it pretentious and silly and the ending was very predictable from the second chapter on.
This is the second Jonquil series book I read, after As You Are (out of order, I know). I thought nothing could top the experience in As You Are, so I was pleasantly surprised to love this one just as much.
Marion was such a lovable heroine. At first, I thought her overly positive attitude was a little fake, and that is how others saw her as well at first. But she was someone who had experienced great tragedy and chose to remember the good and focus on joy. Marion simply overflowed with love and joy, transforming the life of Layton and his daughter Caroline. I enjoyed watching Layton slowly let Marion in, slowly accept the help of his family, and eventually embrace love.
I don't usually love romance books with children in them. Sometimes it can be a little annoying and lately it feels like clean romances are filled with children. Don't get me wrong, I like kids. But I usually prefer to have a romance story without them. However, I absolutely loved Caroline. When Marion first meets this scared little girl who feels abandoned, my heart just broke for her. It was wonderful to see her spirit learn to soar after Marion came into her life, to see her relationship with her father grow, and to see her confidence build. Caroline was probably my favorite character after Marion, truly. But because of this, I did wish for a little more at the end. Kind of a spoiler (but not really) ***** I would have loved to see Caroline's reaction to knowing that Marion was staying forever and was going to be her mom. It was a little disappointing to not see that. ***** end spoiler.
If you have read other books in the Jonquil series or if you enjoy clean regency romances, read this book. It is full of heart, real characters, and a compelling romance.
