Written within the boundaries of Christian category romance, Capshaw does an excellent job of character and emotional development. I appreciated her deft use of description to paint a picture of the era and the Roman setting. She uses the Christian thread like a gossamer strand, rather than a heavy rope. A refreshing and enjoyable read.

What a good story of our faithful God and His plans for us. What a comfort knowing God loves us even with our insecurities and flaws . He is always near loving and guiding us.
This author passed a great story line with unexpected turns and secrets. Not a run of the mill historical romance you can predict. I have her a 4 instead of 5 because I think she could have exhibited a little more writing skill, better personal editing. But I'm sure there are great things to come from this writer!
I loved the first story, The Gladiator. I didn't think she could do it again. But CC wrote another riveting story that I couldn't put down. I read the gladiator two times back to back. I would do that with this one if I hadn't spent the entire week engrossed in this trilogy. (I do have a job and a husband. -) Capshaw's writing ability is simply amazing. Aside from the intensely passionate characters and compelling story lines, the imagery in her writing style is phenomenal. As a budding writer myself, I am very happy to have chanced upon this series.
This is the first book by Carla Capshaw that I read. I was so pleasantly surprised... It knocked my socks off. Her writing is in a league above and beyond most Love Inspired authors. Finally a Christian romance worth reading! I immediately bought the others in the gladiator series and was similarly impressed. I can't say enough good things about this author. Her themes are refreshing and filled with great insights. The characters actually talk to each other in realistic and meaningful ways! The plots keep moving and the main characters don't get hung up in endless, repetitive musings about their concerns. I love how straightforward and genuine her writing and her characters are. Bravo!
What a great story, love the storyline. God does answer prayers, God does love bringing two people together. God can change hearts.
This is my favorite of the 3 books in the series. The romantic timing is perfect in this story of gladiators, slavery and those who are entertained by suffering. The author is amazing in her story telling and I only wish she would write more!
I made the mistake of reading these books in the wrong order... so I couldn't remember some of the stuff referred to in this book that occurred in the Gladiator [which I love], but it wasn't a big issue. I really like these three books set in Rome, and after reading this one, I want to read the entire series again, in order. Really enjoyable, highly recommended.
